This park was a picnic venue at the
close of the century, and closed abruptly in 1978. Many of the rides
remain there to this day, and even though the park is fenced in now, you are
greeted by the wooden roller coaster as you reach the old gates. In
mid-2002, a bored teenager set fire to the old ballroom. Unfortunately, I
never had the opportunity to visit this park when it was open, though I am told
by many that it was a fantastic place. There are a number of fan sites for
this park that you may wish to google, and Sharon Kraynek has authored several
books on the park that you may wish to find.
I recently received an email from Steve T.,
who wrote:
"I
live in Wooster Ohio about 20 miles from Chippewa Lake.I have
alot of fond memories of the place.Of all the coasters that I
rode in my youth the big dipper at Chippewa was the best. The one
at Meyers Lake in Canton Ohio was second.
I
remember going to Chippewa every spring on our elementary school
outing. After I spent all the money my Mom gave me on rides I
would go to the boardwalk that was attached to the Ball Room and
overlooked the lake.I would reach in my pocket and take out my
hand line fishing gear, bait it up with little balls of bread
that I saved from my lunch then happily proceed to catch
bluegills until it was time to go home.
As
a teenager we used to all get together and go there with our
girl friends on WHLO appreciation day (an Akron AM Radio
Station). We would go on rides, have some food then go to the
Ballroom and dance to the music the DJ'S were playing.
As
an adult until it closed in 1978 I went there with my first Wife
and our circle of friends three or four times every summer. We
always had a blast and yes I always had a hand fishing line in
my pocket just in case. The memories of Chippewa Lake Park are
priceless."
Thanks for the memories!
